Wildflower Series

This lively, colourful series was created in response to the vibrant surroundings I was privileged to enjoy during my Art Residency in June. The weather was glorious and the energy generated by all the Spring growth was palpable. Days were long, nights were clear and star filled. Studio time was peaceful, uninterrupted and stretched out over several weeks. I was neck deep in the wildflower meadow surrounding the house. Almost inevitably what emerged was floral and wild.

Three are sold but three are available from my shop and the Yealm Art Society Spring Sale 19th-21st April. They are mixed media on cradled A3 boards framed in white St Ives frames. £295

The culmination of a year's work, it is a delight to hang them all together for the first time in public. Those of you who follow my Instagram account will have seen snippets of the pictures and information about my inspiration and process. Some were painted at the ‘Chicken Shed’, others in my own studio and still others on the coast of Brittany . Flux series

‘Hovering’ 84x60cm

Abstract painting with various shapes and colors, including teal, pink, black, and white, on a predominantly light background.

‘Nourishing’ 84x60cm

Abstract painting, predominantly in black, green, red, and white colors.

‘Merging’ 84x60cm

Flux suggested itself as a title. It encapsulated my life for a period of two years as I contemplated moving from my riverside home of 20 years. There were compelling reasons to move but the climate for selling houses, always a changing one, was undergoing a period of uncertainty.  I was consequently in a state of limbo, unable to consider where I might settle in the future and unsettled in my current home.

It caused me to consider  what home really meant to me, where my sense of security derived from and how to endure in the ‘flux’.  Out of this period of reflection three large scale paintings emerged. Hovering’, Merging’ and ‘Nourishing. As the titles suggest they are about states of being, which are dynamic and ongoing. They have energy but also a sense of peace, balance and well-being. Life is a dynamic state, these paintings are my response to its challenges, beauties and uncertainties.

There is a childlike joy, which never leaves you, in peering into a rock pool. Waiting still until a shy crab or blenny emerges from the canopy of brightly coloured weeds. Watching near transparent shrimps, jewel anemone tentacles waving. But life in this liminal region is already tough, how will it fair with the temperature rises predicted?

These tiny precious ecosystems, so familiar and precious, are threatened.

My paintings are memories, feelings evoked, wistful representations of rock pools. Inspired both by local beaches and by reading ‘The Sea Is Not Made of Water: Life Between the Tides’ by Adam Nicolson

As he writes

‘Life is tidal, full of loss and arrival, a thing that makes and ebbs,”

A reminder to us of the fragility of our little ecosystem.
